There's 2 plugins already available , one for blender one for Houdini, each one with their pro and cons .

It fast, and reliable , but doesn't have many features, and the way it creates the textures is not very friendly to Renderman or Karma

a new version of this resolve some of the issues with textures by implementing a new node called texture atlas .
